Robinson Secondary, West Springfield High School Students Awarded Certificates for Writing

The four students join a total of eight Fairfax County Public Schools winners.

Four students from Burke area schools have won certificates from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) for superior writing. Robinson Secondary School's Ben Familiant and Jei-Si Ang, Annie Fuller and Emma Spillman from West Springfield High School were one of eight FCPS students to receive certificates, according to a news release from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). The NCTE 2013 Achievement Awards is an annual competiton that requires nominated students to submit two pieces of writing for judging. The theme for this year's submissions was “Personal Mount Rushmore.” A total of 753 high school juniors were nominated for the awards this year, the release further states. Virginia Lacrosse: Lake Braddock Falls to Robinson in Playoffs, Robinson Boys Advance

The Robinson boys lacrosse team will face McLean in the second round of the Northern Region tournament.

The Lake Braddock Secondary School boys lacrosse team fell 8-1 to Robinson Secondary School Tuesday night, knocking the Bruins out of the Virginia AAA Northern Region tournament. With their win, the Robinson boys advance to round two and face McLean on Thursday. The LBSS girls lacrosse team met a similar fate, but put up a fight against Centreville before losing 13-12 in overtime. The Robinson girls lacrosse team did not fare as well as the boys, falling 16-6 to W.T. Woodson. 'All That Jazz' Concert Comes to West Springfield High School Saturday

The 26-person all-girl West Springfield High School choir will perform a variety of jazz and Broadway songs.

The West Springfield High School Personality Show Choir will perform a selection of jazz and Broadway tunes Saturday night as part of their annual "All That Jazz" concert. "This 'All that Jazz' show is our interpretation of a modern Cabaret and we hope there is something for everyone," said Choir Director Dustin Brandt. "The tradition of 'All that Jazz' is more in the name. There is a healthy variety of jazz/pop/Broadway songs and even some modern a cappella, stomp and alt country." The concert is one of two annual productions for the choir. According to Brandt, the choir also hosts a "Breakfast with Santa" fundraiser in December when students dress up as famous animated characters and superheroes and perform carols and seasonal songs. Burke Area Schools Among Top 15 High Schools in Virginia, U.S. News & World Report Says

Lake Braddock, West Springfield, and Robinson were all ranked. In ranking of top U.S. high schools, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology remains the top school in Virginia, but slips in national standing.

Fairfax County is home to the top five public high schools in Virginia, according to the U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 Best High Schools rankings released Tuesday. U.S. News generated the rankings through a partnership with American Institutes for Research, looking at students’ performance on standardized tests and how successfully schools educated black, Hispanic and low-income students. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology was once again ranked the top school in Virginia. It was ranked No. 4 of all schools nationally, down from its No. 2 post in 2012. West Springfield Teens Plead No Contest to 'Unlawful Filming' in Child Pornography Case

Two of the boys accepted plea bargain deals. A third boy is scheduled to be sentenced June 12. The teenagers were originally charged with possession and distribution of child pornography.

UPDATE Thursday 5:30 p.m.: Two of the teens, in plea bargain deals, pleaded no contest today to "unlawful filming," in juvenile court Thursday, according to a news report by WJLA. A third teen, the TV station reported, who was fighting all charges, went through with a trial and was convicted of two counts of unlawful filming and found not guilty on the child porn charges and not guilty on a third charge of unlawful filming. Juvenile Court Judge Thomas Mann cleared the public from the room when the sex tapes were played in court, according to MyFoxDC.com. I really take exception to this article and the constant association of West Springfield HS with the activities that resulted in the arrest of these teens. The picture of the High School accompanies every article as if this took place 'at' the school. Indeed, many people think that it did just from reading these articles. West Springfield High School Dance Team Wins Fourth Nationals Title

The team returned home Tuesday from the National Dance Alliance competition in Orlando.

They’ve done it again: The West Springfield High School Dance Team (WSDT) won their fourth consecutive National Dance Alliance (NDA) Hip Hop championship last weekend in Orlando. The team returned to the Burke area late Tuesday evening to a warm welcome from parents, alumni, West Springfield High School students and staff, said Jason King, one of two coaches and choreographers for the team. Coaches King and Tara Perez have worked together for the last eight years. “Twitter and Facebook helped spread the word pretty quickly, so we’ve had a lot of congratulations about the win since Sunday,” said King. “It means a lot to the them to know that their school was supporting them.” Dubbed the “Super Bowl of dance,” the National Dance Alliance is …

Burke Area Students to Perform in 2013 Virginia All-State Chorus

The students, who are from Lake Braddock Secondary School, Robinson Secondary School, and West Springfield High School, will perform with other students from across the state in the chorus next month.

Ten Fairfax County Public School students from Burke-area schools Lake Braddock Secondary School, Robinson Secondary School, and West Springfield High School have been selected to perform in the Virginia All-State Chorus for 2013. A total of 66 students were chosen from FCPS schools for the All-State Chorus, which is sponsored by the Virginia Choral Directors Association. An additional 42 FCPS students were also named as alternates to the chorus. Of those 42 alternates, four are from Burke-area schools. Burke Area Girl and Boy Scouts Reflect on Presidential Inaugural Events

Several students from the Burke area participated in last month's inauguration.

Several military children from the Burke area were among the more than 3,000 youth and adults who participated in the 57th Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama. More specifically, girl and boy scouts from Burke were part of the “Kid’s Inaugural: Our Children Our Future” concert on Saturday, Jan. 19. The event, which was hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, was a time to come together and honor military families. Performers for the evening included musicians Usher, Katy Perry, Far East Movement, Mindless Behavior, members of the FOX TV show "Glee", actor Nick Cannon, America’s Got Talent act iLuminate, and the Soul Children of Chicago. Seven Burke Area Students Win Scholastic Writing Awards

The annual competition recognizes students across the country and their creative talents.

Students from Lake Braddock Secondary School, Robinson Secondary School, and West Springfield High School received regional awards in the 2013 Scholastic Writing Awards competition. According to a news release from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), of the 76 high school student winners in the county, seven are from Burke area schools. Five of the 39 Silver Key entries from FCPS were from a Burke area school. A total of 13 FCPS students won Gold Key awards and 61 FCPS students received honorable mentions. According to the Scholastic website, Gold Key regional winners are considered for national level competition.
