Supervisor John Cook, Residents Break Ground at Site of New Park

The park will be built on the former Kings West Swim Club site in Fairfax.

Braddock District residents and Supervisor John Cook helped break ground Wednesday at the site of the former Kings West Swim Club and the new location of Rabbit Run community park at 4803 Tapestry Dr., in Fairfax. The new park, which Cook called a "win-win-win" for Fairfax County residents, will include a new stormwater management facility in addition to the park, which will replace the clubhouse and parking lot. "It's a great day. This has been a long time coming, about eight years. This pool, in its day, was a great recreational facility before it fell on hard times. It's great to finally see some work starting on this project," said Cook in his remarks. The Kings West Swim Club closed several years ago due to declining membership. …

Braddock Dogs Seeks to Formalize Burke Dog Park Plans

Group to approve by-laws, elect board and submit memo of intent to Fairfax County.

Braddock Dogs, a group hoping to make an off-leash dog park a reality in Burke, is scheduled to meet next Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Braddock District Offices to elect a board of directors, formally approve by-laws, and submit a letter of intent to sponsor a dog park as part of the Fairfax County Park Authority's (FCPA) master plan for Monticello Park. "There needs to be an organization in place to take responsibility for the dog park before the county will build it," said Braddock Dogs organizer Russ Rosen.  Rosen said at least 10 to 15 people are needed at the meeting to formalize the group, and he is asking residents interested in a dog park at Monticello Park to join him in Braddock Hall in the Braddock District Offices. I believe Fairfax County needs more dog parks and open areas for dogs to run off leash. We probably have more dog pets than kids yet the number of playgrounds and playing fields outnumber dog parks greatly. Dogs are now forbidden on all public school grounds, farmer's markets and more and more places by official edict - it's about time pet owners got some space of their own.   more ›

The expansion will add 6,220 square feet of concrete skating area to the park.

Construction on the expansion of the Wakefield Skatepark, located next to the Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale, is officially underway.  The Fairfax County Park Authority broke ground earlier this month — close to a year after the design project first began. An additional 6,220 square feet of concrete skating area will be added to the existing 21,500 square foot facility, and a 400 square foot shade structure will be placed in the center of the new facility, according to Judy Pedersen, public …

Braddock District Meetings on County's FY2013 Budget

Three town hall meetings on the proposed FY2013 budget are scheduled in the Braddock District.

County Executive Tony Griffin presented the county's FY2013 proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors on February 28. There are currently 11 town hall meetings scheduled for community comment on the budget.  Three are in the Braddock District.  They are: The proposed $6.7 billion budget provides taxpayers with no new services, gives the schools less than they requested, eliminates the police cadet program, and leaves the property tax rate at $1.07 per $100 of assessed value.  The average homeowner will pay nearly $34 more, however, because the mean assessed value of homes has risen.

Residents Propose Off-Leash Dog Park in Burke

A public hearing is scheduled for Monday on the first off-leash dog park in the Braddock District area of Fairfax County.

Burke-area dog lovers have been working for more than two years to bring an off-leash dog park to the Braddock District, and a public hearing next week could bring the idea closer to reality. “An off-leash dog area allows dogs to socialize and run without being intrusive and be a problem,” said Russ Rosen, who is a member of Braddock Dogs, a group formed to promote creating an off-leash, fenced-in dog park. “It gives them an opportunity to get some exercise and be around other dogs and let people who like dogs to meet in another area.” The Fairfax County Park Authority is hosting a public meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Kings Park Library to discuss the idea and take input on a draft of the Monticello Park master plan. The master …

Updated 3 p.m. Wednesday Republican incumbent John Cook was re-elected to his second term as Braddock District Supervisor on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday evening in what was largely considered one of the most contended races in the county.
