Community Corner

Burke Historical Society meeting

Please join us at our general meeting, **4:00** p.m. on Sunday, September 29th, at **Heatherwood Retirement Community**.  BHS member Mary Lipsey will talk about her new book on Dr. William Christmas, who in 1908 in Fairfax County became the third American to fly a powered heavier-than-air craft.

**Please note that we will meet at 4:00 p.m., a half-hour earlier than usual.  Also, we are meeting at Heatherwood Retirement Community, 9642 Burke Lake Rd, Burke, VA 22015, as part of an outreach to the residents there.**

You can park in Heatherwood’s small lot to the left as you enter from Burke Lake Road, or in the lot for the Burke Health & Rehabilitation Center via the same entrance and to the right.  There is also street parking along Burning Branch Road directly across Burke Lake Road, as well as the parking lot at the Burke School closer to Burke Centre Parkway. If you park at the Health & Rehab Center, walk along the asphalt path running to the right of the Heatherwood building, which takes you to the Heatherwood parking lot and the sidewalk to Heatherwood’s main entrance.

Use the main entrance with the green portico at the front of Heatherwood.  Upon entering, take a sharp left and go through the passage to the dining hall.  Immediately to your left will be the Family Room in which we’ll meet.

Mary Lipsey spent 29 years teaching seventh-grade American History at Lake Braddock Secondary School.  She has been a volunteer docent for the National Museum of American History since 1980 and for the National Archives since 2004.  In addition to writing A Christmas Flight, she is the co-author of Braddock’s True Gold: 20th-Century Life in the Heart of Fairfax County.  She serves on the Fairfax County History Commission and is president of the Fairfax County Cemetery Preservation Association, Inc., which works to preserve and protect family cemeteries in Fairfax County.
